Those crazy architecture students: Party features outrageous costumes, live bands and drag queens
Amanda York
SCENE EDITOR
The name denotes a French school of thought for architecture but the event depicts the biggest party of the year in Lexington.
The Beaux Arts Ball, an annual tradition hosted by the UK architecture students, will take place Saturday night at the Radisson.
Dana Motley, director of the Beaux Arts Ball and an architecture senior, said the tradition started years ago and that it includes more than just UK.
"College of architecture students all over the country have done this for decades," Motley said. "It is an opportunity for all of the students to celebrate once a year."
Motley said that when the event began students hosted it in tobacco warehouses. She said they moved from tobacco warehouses to the Radisson in order to bring more bands to Kentucky.
"Since we started doing it at the Radisson, it has become more of an opportunity for us to bring bands to Kentucky who don't have the opportunity to come," she said.
Groove Collective, an acid jazz band that will perform at the ball, has made Lexington the last stop on their tour.
Not only has the event grown locally, but it has also grown nationally.
"We have made it into the biggest Beaux Arts Ball in the country," Motley said. "It used to be small and it has become this huge event that it is now."
Along with bringing music to the area, the Beaux Arts Ball also brings what Motley calls their "infamous drag show."
Motley said people come from all over to perform in the drag show.
"They are the best drag queens I have seen. They really are great and they know what they are doing," she said.
The drag queens aren't the only ones who dress up though, Motley said. Many people who attend the party come in costume.
"Most of the crowd does masquerade. That's anything from elaborate masquerade costumes to tuxedos and formals," she said.
The party doesn't require that people dress up but Motley said most people enjoy preparing their costumes.
"People come all night but it is something you prepare for all day," she said. "You prepare your costume and you come and just have a great time all night long."
Despite the fact that students from the college of architecture host the event, Motley stresses that all people are welcome.
"Anyone around is welcome to come. We get a majority of the arts and architecture crowd in Lexington but anyone and everyone can come," she said.
Motley also said the event draws a diverse age group.
"It targets every age group possible. It is the best event in Lexington all year," she said. "I guarantee it."
