STAFF CRITIC
Too many people judge movies based on whether they are realistic or not.
Movies are supposed to expand your imagination and make things unreal. When we go to the movies we shouldn't expect to watch the news - we want to be free from the harsh realities of the world.
The Skulls jumps far from reality into a world where a secret society rules over the entire world. The premise, ludicrous in the real world, entices an imaginative audience.
The Skulls stars Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek) as Luke McNamara, a crew superstar at Yale University. His financial situation, which is lousy, may keep him from getting into law school. A secret society named the Skulls recruits Luke and a badass Caleb Mandrake (Paul Walker). On the last night of possible induction, the Skulls call Luke and Caleb and send them off on a scavenger hunt for initiation into the society.
The Skulls turns out to be a dream for Luke and Caleb. They get all the money, girls and cars they ever wanted. But nothing comes without a price.
Luke's friends, Chloe (Leslie Bibb) from Popular and Will Beckford (Hill Harper) from He Got Game disapprove of his membership into the Skulls. Luke loses their friendship when he refuses to drop out.
Luke continues his wonderful time with the Skulls until his friend Will bites the dust. The Skulls deny having a hand in the death, though Luke refuses to believe it. Luke then must try to get back Chloe and fight the Skulls.
The car chase and crew scenes of the movie are very entertaining. They use typical music grabbers but that doesn't matter.
Joshua Jackson has a great character on Dawson's Creek, Pacey, but he's not typically a wonderful actor. His gives a good performance as the main character in this movie, though.
I will concede that Paul Walker's bad boy performance makes anything PeeWee Herman ever did Oscar-worthy.
The Skulls, not just for teenagers, remains an entertaining picture throughout.
Those who are capable of suspending their reality will enjoy The Skulls. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this one.
