Home sweet home. For the next three weekends, the UK men's and women's track and field teams will have home field advantage while competing at Nutter Field House.Tomorrow the gun will sound at 1 p.m. to begin the Rod McCravy Memorial Track meet at Nutter.
The one-day track meet will feature Appalachian State, Kent State, Louisville, Memphis, Miami (Fla.), and Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State.
UK is coming off last weekend's meet at Butler University in Indianapolis where the Cats showcased many individual performances.
One of those performances was by Passion Richardson in the sprint events for UK.
At the Butler meet, Richardson finished second in both the 60 and 200 meters.
With last weekend over, her attention has shifted to her events on Saturday.
"Now I'm looking forward to the meet this weekend," she said
.Head coach Don Weber is also looking to this weekend because of the way his team has responded each week since the season began.
"You just hope to see improvements," he said.
Weber has seen the improvements after the first two meets and has been encouraged with the results.
However, he is ready for his younger athletes to step up to the plate and take some of the pressure off of the experienced guys.
"We've now gotten our feet wet and it is time for our younger people to contribute," Weber said.
A few of these underclassmen did contribute last week.
Freshman sprinter Jason Johnson ran well at Butler coming away with a second and fifth place finish in his two events.
One of the two individual event winners for the men's team was freshman thrower Matt Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh won in his only event, the weight throw.
In a sport like track and field, meets are set up in championship format to give the athletes a chance to prepare for their big meets later in the season.
For UK, these big meets are the Southeastern Conference Championships in Gainesville, Fla., Feb. 21-22 and the NCAA National Championships in Indianapolis March 7-8.
Weber is not expecting his team to go out and set any world records Saturday.
He is just looking for his team's trend to continue.
"It's just a step in the road."
