<FONT SIZE=4><B>Medical Center to hold memorial service for Wiley</B></FONT><P>
A memorial service is planned tomorrow for Deborah Wiley, the social work graduate student who was killed in a car accident last Friday night.Wiley's service will begin at 2 p.m. in the 6th-floor auditorium at the Chandler Medical Center.

Her husband, Ben Wiley, remains in the Chandler Medical Center, suffering back injuries and broken ribs from the accident.

<FONT SIZE=4><B>FDA approves diabetes drug to eliminate shots</B></FONT>
<P>
WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration approved a drug yesterday that offers a million diabetics the hope of reducing - and for some even stopping - their insulin shots.
<P>
Hitting pharmacy shelves by the end of March, Parke Davis' troglitazone is the first drug to attack the underlying trigger of Type II diabetes, the disease's most common form.
<P>
It somehow resensitizes the body to insulin, a hormone that converts blood sugar into energy.
<P>
Some patients - about 15 percent of those who tested the drug - no longer needed insulin shots because the amount their bodies manufactured became sufficient again.
<P>
Most patients still needed insulin but required fewer injections each day.
<P>
<FONT SIZE=4><B>Riddick Bowe says he has joined the Marines</B></FONT>
<P>
NEW YORK -- Riddick Bowe, heavyweight boxer and now weekend warrior.
<P>
The ex-champ said Thursday that he has joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve because it's "something I've always wanted to do, and I thought I'd do it before I got too old."
<P>
Bowe, 29, said he will have to attend three months of boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., then will be an active reserve for three years. He reports to boot camp Feb. 10.
<P>
"When I complete boot camp, I'll resume my boxing career,"' Bowe said.
<P>
In Bowe's last fight, he took a severe battering in a rematch with Andrew Golota.
<P>
He then beat Golota for the second straight time when the Polish fighter again was disqualified for low blows.
<P>
Bowe's enlistment will entail attending monthly meetings and two weeks of summer camp for three years.
