Halls, apartments get spooky to brighten Halloween spirits

The festive ghosts, witches and pumpkins covering residence halls and apartments all over campus are helping students get into the Halloween spirit."Decorations get everybody in the Halloween spirit. It's one of my favorite holidays because it marks the beginning of fall," said accounting freshman Rian Starnes.Some students were apathetic to the Halloween decorations.
"Halloween doesn't really affect me either way. It's just another day," said biology freshman Mike Glassmyer.
For other students, Halloween holds special memories from the past.
"I think it's cute that parents help their kids decide what to be and it makes their kids so happy for that one night," said electrical engineering freshman Beth Stokely.
To some Halloween is a favorite time of year.
"Halloween is my favorite holiday. It's the one day of the year you can get crazy and that's why I love it," said education freshman Kim Carter.
Residence halls have several events planned to help make Halloween fun for students.
Blanding Tower is holding a tower-wide floor decorating contest to be judged Oct. 29. Kirwan IV is also hosting a door decorating contest to be judged Friday.
Keeneland Hall will be holding a murder mystery party for Halloween, and resident advisors are encouraging residents to dress up.
Resident Hall Government is inviting children from the Big Brother/Big Sister organization to trick or treat on Oct. 30 in residence halls. Blazer Hall will hold a party for residents with candy and a movie.
Resident advisors helped students get into the spirit of the holiday by decorating the residence hall lobbies.
"Decorating makes it feel more homey," said Hall Director of Blanding IV, Tammy Hemmerle.
"Decorating brings the residents into the Halloween spirit, it makes the residence halls seem more like home," said Blanding IV resident advisor Sarah Hillard.
Delta Zeta social sorority also invited got its members into Halloween with Boo Buddies. The members picked names of other sorority sisters and will be giving gifts to their Boo Buddies until the end of the week, when the identity of their Boo Buddies will be revealed.
"Its exciting to get gifts when you don't know who they're from," said undeclared freshman Heather Bostwick.
One sorority will give something back to the community as Halloween approaches.
Alpha Omicron Pi social sorority will be holding a Halloween party for disadvantaged kids at their house Oct. 28.
