Defense of rights enough for most

To the editor:

After reading Editorial Cartoonist Alex DeGrand's column in last Monday's Kentucky Kernel, I felt compelled to respond.

It would seem that DeGrand feels that he is owed something in return for being a potential draftee. Well, you already get something - it's called freedom.

Among the rights of freedom is the right to the pursuit of happiness. Yes, only the pursuit of happiness is a right. No one ever said we have a right to be happy. There is a difference.

Still, the government, which is for the people, does allow us to respond to their actions. It's called voting. History, in fact the last election, shows that citizens achieve change by voting.

Why DeGrand feels he is being slighted I have no idea. I have had a father and a grandfather who went to war and neither of them received anything but their rights. They both went to war because their country asked them to defend freedom.

Is that too much to ask?
