Rapper gets flashy

Staff report

Local rapper Jonathan Floyd, known as "Flash" onstage will perform Saturday at the Wrocklage with Nonchalant. Floyd, a UK health communications senior, recently completed a demo tape with Abstract Visions Entertainment, based in Lexington. The demo includes tracks like "Daddies Lil' Girl," "Situation," "Shag-Nasti" and "Freestyle (Live)."

Floyd's rap style is a breach from the popular gangsta style rap. The Lexington native focuses on positivity, rather than glorifying violence.

Floyd cites influences ranging from L.L. Cool J, Houdini and A Tribe Called Quest to Jimmy Buffett and Dwight Yoakam.

Such a varied array of musical influences has pushed Floyd's music past the typical sample of beats into experimentation with acoustic instruments.

"Daddies lil' Girl" features live horns and Floyd's "My Anthem" uses electric guitars.

Floyd brings a different perspective to rap, coming from a middle class background. But such a unique style landed Floyd on an Atlanta stage this past summer as a performer in the popular Lollapalooza tour.
